A backflow incense burner looks simple — put a cone in, light it, watch the smoke fall. But if you have ever tried it and ended up with smoke that rises normally instead of cascading downward, you already know there is more to it than that. What you need — backflow cones, not standard cones

The single most important thing to know about backflow incense burners is this: they require backflow incense cones specifically. Standard incense cones placed in a backflow burner will produce smoke that rises normally upward — no waterfall effect, no cascading mist. The burner itself has nothing to do with the direction of the smoke. The cone does everything.

Backflow cones are visually almost identical to standard cones, but they have one key difference: a small hollow channel runs through the centre of the cone from bottom to top. When the cone is lit and the tip begins to smoulder, this channel draws the dense smoke downward rather than allowing it to rise. The smoke emerges at the base of the cone rather than the tip, and gravity does the rest — it falls through the burner’s design and pools at the base.

Step by step — how to light and use your backflow burner

Step 1 — Choose your location

Place the burner on a flat, stable surface indoors. The most important environmental condition for the backflow effect is still air — even a gentle breeze from an open window, a fan, or an air vent will disperse the downward-flowing smoke before it can form the waterfall effect. Close windows and turn off nearby fans before you begin. A desk, meditation altar, bookshelf, or bedside table all work well. The effect is most visually striking in soft or dim lighting, where the smoke trail is clearly visible against the background.

Step 2 — Place the backflow cone

Place the backflow cone in the designated opening on your burner — this is typically a small indentation or hole at the top of the figurine or vessel, directly above the channel that will direct the smoke downward. The cone should sit securely with its base resting in the opening and its pointed tip facing upward. Do not force it — the cone sits in the opening rather than being pressed into it.

Step 3 — Light the tip

Hold a lighter or match to the very tip of the cone and allow it to catch. The tip should produce a small flame that lasts 5–10 seconds. Let the flame establish itself fully before moving to the next step — do not blow it out immediately.

Step 4 — Blow out the flame gently

Once the tip of the cone is glowing red with a small ember, gently blow out the flame. The cone should continue to smoulder — you will see a thin wisp of smoke rising from the tip. This is normal at this stage. Do not leave the flame burning; it needs to be extinguished for the backflow effect to work properly.

Step 5 — Wait for the waterfall to form

This is the step most people skip. After extinguishing the flame, wait 30–60 seconds before assessing the effect. The backflow smoke takes time to build in density and begin flowing downward through the burner’s channel. In the first 20–30 seconds the smoke may still appear to rise from the tip — this is the lighter, initial smoke escaping before the denser backflow begins. Once the cone is fully established in its burn, the smoke will shift: you will see it begin to pool around the base of the cone, then flow downward through the burner’s design in a slow, dense cascade. The full waterfall effect is typically visible within 60 seconds of lighting.

Why does the smoke go down instead of up?

Standard incense smoke rises because it is hot — heat causes the smoke particles to become less dense than the surrounding air, and they rise as a result. Backflow incense cones work differently. The hollow channel through the centre of the cone creates a draft effect: as the cone burns from the top downward, the channel draws cooler air up from below while simultaneously channelling the smoke downward through it. By the time the smoke exits at the base of the cone, it is denser and cooler than the surrounding air — and so it falls rather than rises. Gravity carries it down through the burner and into the pool at the base. The visual effect — smoke falling like water — happens because the smoke is genuinely behaving more like a liquid than a gas at this point.

Troubleshooting — why is my smoke going up instead of down?

Air movement in the room

This is the most common cause by far. If the smoke forms briefly and then disperses upward or sideways, there is air movement in the room that you may not have noticed — a distant fan, an air conditioning vent, a gap under a door. Move the burner to a more enclosed location, or reduce the air movement in the room. Even very gentle air currents that you cannot feel on your skin will disrupt the delicate downward flow of backflow smoke.

Using standard cones instead of backflow cones

Standard cones have no hollow channel and will always produce smoke that rises. If you are using cones that came with a different burner or purchased separately without checking the label, this is likely the issue. Backflow cones are typically labelled clearly — look for “backflow,” “reverse flow,” or “waterfall incense cones.”

The cone was not fully lit before you blew it out

If the ember at the tip of the cone is too small or not fully established, the cone will struggle to maintain a steady burn and the backflow effect will be inconsistent. Allow the flame to establish for a full 5–10 seconds before gently extinguishing it. The tip should glow clearly red before you blow it out.

Not waiting long enough

The backflow effect takes 30–60 seconds to establish fully. If you blow out the flame and immediately look for the waterfall, you will see the initial lighter smoke still rising from the tip. Give it time. The dense backflow smoke builds gradually as the cone finds its rhythm.

Which incense scents work best in a backflow burner

Any scent that is available in backflow cone form will work — the scent does not affect the backflow mechanism. That said, some scents have particular associations with the kinds of spaces and practices that backflow burners suit best.
